Why I Choose to Avoid Secular Music

When I was younger, I sought guidance from fellow churchgoers on why Christians should refrain from listening to secular music. Unfortunately, their responses lacked biblical evidence and mostly boiled down to simple advice: “Just don’t do it.”

Unsatisfied with their answers, I embarked on my own Bible study, seeking clarity on this issue. It was through careful examination of specific scriptures that God illuminated the truth for me. But before we dive into those verses, let’s first define what secular music really is.

I personally define secular music as any music that does not glorify God. It’s not merely about the quality of the lyrics; rather, it’s about whether the songwriter intends to honor God through their musical content. If more believers asked themselves this question, they would think twice before embracing secular music.

Man listening to music

Explanation from Genesis

During my study of Genesis chapter 4, I stumbled upon a verse that shed light on the birth of secular music. After Cain was chastised by God for killing Abel, he left the presence of God (Genesis 4:16). Subsequently, every invention and creation that followed in Cain’s line of descendants was tainted by evil and devoid of the Lord’s influence. Let’s explore how secular music came into existence according to Genesis 4:19-21.

“Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.” – Genesis 4:19-21 (NIV, emphasis added)

Five generations after Cain, Lamech married two women. One of his first wife’s children was Jubal, who became the progenitor of all who play stringed instruments and pipes (wind instruments).

Interestingly, if we examine the descriptions of Lucifer in Ezekiel 28:13, we find two words associated with his nature as a heavenly singer: “tabrets” and “pipes”. A tabret, or timbrel, is a small hand drum similar to a tambourine, symbolizing stringed instruments. The “pipes” mentioned in the verse represent wind instruments. These two categories encompass the major types of musical instruments we have today, all encapsulated within one being—Lucifer.

“You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite, and emerald, topaz, onyx, and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. I provided you with tabrets and pipes as your adornment.” – Ezekiel 28:13 (NKJV, emphasis added)

Although Lucifer lost these qualities, he still remains a deceiver. And because all the generations of Cain dwelt outside the presence of God, the invention of music that does not glorify God became possible.

Therefore, the primary reason why Christians should avoid secular music is because it does not originate from God. Anyone who produces such songs is not filled with the Holy Spirit; rather, they are being used by the enemy to corrupt the hearts and minds of people.

Why Christians shouldn't listen to secular music

Another Perspective

The Bible encourages Christians to be filled with the Spirit, which requires consuming the right things.

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” – Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)

Just as an excessive intake of alcohol can impair one’s body and control, God desires us to be continuously filled with His Spirit. To achieve this, we must not neglect the habit of singing spiritual songs and hymns in our hearts.

You cannot be filled with what you’ve not consumed.

Here’s the point: If we do not listen to Christian songs, they will not play in our hearts. Why? Because these songs serve as the spiritual content that the Holy Spirit can utilize to help us stay filled with Him.

When Christians choose to listen to secular music, they grieve the Holy Spirit. Why? Because the content of these songs fails to glorify God. Secular music is not just harmless entertainment; it acts as poison to our spiritual selves. It’s time to unsubscribe from any digital content produced by these musicians.

If you have downloaded any secular music, whether audio or video, on your phone, it’s time to declare a holy war against it. Set aside any jokes or excitement, and delete this content without hesitation. It’s time to not only proclaim, “I am a holy child of God,” but also to live a life that reflects holiness unto the Lord.
