Flags across Colorado are being lowered to half-mast today, catching the attention of residents and passersby alike. The reason for this solemn gesture is to commemorate Peace Officers Memorial Day, as proclaimed by President Trump. This day holds great significance as we honor the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving their communities.

Remembering Our Heroes
Peace Officers Memorial Day provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers. These individuals put their lives on the line each day, upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of our communities. Unfortunately, some have lost their lives or suffered permanent disabilities in the line of duty. This year, we also remember those who have fallen victim to the coronavirus while serving their communities.
Throughout history, law enforcement officials have faced crisis and tragedy with unwavering determination. They are the constant pillars of strength in uncertain times, providing a much-needed sense of security for citizens like you and me. Their efforts should not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Supporting Our Law Enforcement Community
As a nation, we must recognize the crucial work that law enforcement officers undertake. They operate in an environment where their moral and legal authority is constantly under scrutiny. Additionally, they face the difficult task of addressing the actions of those affected by addiction, homelessness, and mental illness. Despite these challenges, their ability to work effectively and maintain their composure is nothing short of extraordinary.
To ensure the safety and effectiveness of our law enforcement officers, the administration is committed to providing them with the necessary resources and support. Last year, President Trump signed an Executive Order to establish the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice. This commission aims to reduce crime while fostering stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Moreover, efforts have been made to expand lifesaving programs such as the National Blue Alert Network, which disseminates information on suspects who pose a credible threat to the safety of our officers.
A Grateful Nation
On this occasion, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the more than 900,000 sworn members of law enforcement who consistently demonstrate their resolve and dedication. Their commitment to protecting us in the face of dangerous uncertainty is commendable. Let us keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers.
As Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week approach, it is incumbent upon us to participate in appropriate ceremonies and activities, honoring the sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers. Let us also display the flag from our homes and businesses, as a symbol of our support and appreciation.
