I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Dreidel

Caryn Yacowitz takes a classic nursery rhyme and gives it a delightful Hanukkah twist in “I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Dreidel.” Drawing inspiration from the original, Yacowitz introduces a red-scarfed Bubbe, who devours various items associated with the holiday. Although the logic behind the objects’ progression may not be as clear as in the original rhyme, the whimsical nature of the story adds to its charm.

A Hanukkah Surprise

“I know an old lady who swallowed a brisket. A twenty-ton brisket! She thought she could risk it.” With each new verse, our protagonist embarks on a culinary adventure, swallowing one item after another. From sauce to latkes and oil, the rhyme bounces playfully along. While the reasoning behind swallowing an enormous menorah after a mountain of gelt may not make sense, it adds to the book’s lighthearted humor.

Artistic Allusions

Adding another layer to the story, illustrator David Slonim cleverly frames each new object as a reference to a famous painting. From Munch’s “The Scream” to Hopper’s “Nighthawks,” the nods to masterpieces are a visual treat. Parents and teachers can engage young readers by challenging them to identify the paintings. However, Slonim’s intention for the art parodies to transcend Hanukkah and speak to the universal experience of family gatherings and celebration may not be fully realized.

A Burst of Energy

Despite its loose connection to Hanukkah, “I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Dreidel” exudes exuberance both in its rhymes and illustrations. The energy within the book breathes life into the pages, making it a fresh and enjoyable read. The last page, featuring Matisse’s “Dance” and depicting the whole family happily dancing in a circle, provides a satisfying conclusion where art and meaning synergize beautifully.
